Roses has been known throughout the ages for the calm waters in its natural port. The Greek Quarter, Roman town, and 11th-century monastery are all found within the historic citadel walls. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria, ordered the construction of the fortifications we see now in 1543 to protect it from pirate and French attacks. The monumental, Renaissance-style entryway built at the time is known as the Sea Gate. Following partial demolition of the site, the Spanish government declared it a national monument in 1961. We’ll then head to the Dali Theater-Museum, the world’s largest Surrealist object. Why is it called a theater museum? Because it was built on the ruins of a municipal theater and Salvador Dali designed and decorated it himself. Who else would have the audacity to put giant eggs on the facade? The collections inside include his paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings, installations, holograms, stereoscopes, and photos. Get a real feel for the man and his unique art during this excursion. You might never look at the world the same again.
