Traveling to Botswana

Botswana identity card

Botswana in figures

Botswana is a southern African country located just north of South Africa. It is the 20th largest country on the African continent, covering an area of 581,730 km². Its population is around 2.4 million, making it one of the least populated countries in Africa. Botswana is known for its political and economic stability, as well as for its abundant wildlife and vast nature reserves. The country's official languages are English and Setswana.

The country's geography

Botswana is landlocked between South Africa to the south, Namibia to the west, Zimbabwe to the east and Mozambique to the southeast. The country is predominantly flat, with landscapes dominated by the Kalahari Desert. The Okavango River flows through the northwest of the country, creating a unique ecosystem and a major tourist attraction.

Climate

Botswana has a semi-arid climate, characterized by dry winters and hot summers. The dry season extends from April to October, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 25°C (77°F) during the day, but dropping below 0°C (32°F) at night. The rainy season runs from November to March, with higher temperatures often reaching 35°C (95°F). The months of May to August offer ideal conditions for wildlife observation.

Currency

Botswana's official currency is the pula (BWP). £1 is equivalent to around 16.8 pula. Major credit cards are generally accepted in hotels, restaurants and stores in the larger towns, but it is advisable to carry cash as well, especially if you venture into more rural areas.

Communications and networks

Botswana's telecommunications network is efficient in the towns. The Chobe National Park area, on the other hand, has poor cell phone coverage and Internet connection is often impossible. It takes 2 to 3 weeks to send a letter from Botswana to Europe.
